What is the most surprising thing for people to learn about being an RD?
The most surprising thing for people to learn about being an RD is that there is unlimited career potential. When I was an undergraduate student, I thought there were only so many routes an RD could take: community, clinical, or private practice. Now that I am out of school, I realize that there are dietitians working in just about every facet of our community, in roles I never dreamed existed.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part about my job is that it intertwines with my lifestyle, so I never feel like it is an actual job. I get to do what I love every day, which is talking to people about the food they eat, and the lifestyles they live, and that gives me great joy.
Do you have any advice for dietitians thinking about getting into communications?
Start today. If you feel as if you already have a passion for, or an interest in, nutrition communications the best way to start is to just take a first step. Whether it is starting an instagram account or finding a mentor in the space, there is always something new to learn and master. Nutrition communications is changing all of the time, and there is never a ‘right time’ to get started. My only regret is that I didn’t start sooner.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?
Ask the right questions to the right people. I never understood the power of networking until I became involved in nutrition communications. Now, many of the relationships that I have built over the years have become treasured friendships with many friends and colleagues across the country. Having a strong support system, peers to provide guidance and mentorship, and knowing the right people to ask the right questions to is an invaluable gift.
How do you find balance?
To find balance, I really try to place my mental and physical well-being above my work commitments. This is much easier said than done, but to find true balance I need to be feeling will in order to enjoy the work that I am doing. I am not afraid to shut off my phone or computer in the middle of the day when needed.
If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be – and why?
If I had to eat one meal for the rest of my life, it would hands down be any form of Mexican food. I am not particular on what it is specifically: tacos, burritos, burritos bowls, nachos – you name it. The combination of the meat, beans, cheese, and fresh produce is my absolute favorite – I could never get sick of it.
Name a career accomplishment that you’re most proud of – and why?
One career accomplishment that I am currently most proud of it the upcoming release of my first cookbook: The 30 Minute Thyroid Cookbook: 125 Healing Recipes for Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s. Writing a cookbook was a new, time and labor-intensive learning process for me, and I am proud of the hard work I put into creating something that will hopefully help the lives of the over 14 million people currently living with Hashimoto’s.
