Name/Title/Credentials:
Valerie Agyeman, RD, Founder of Flourish Heights & Co-Founder of Women’s Nutrition Ghana
How did you become interested in nutrition and dietetics [or nutrition communication]?
I was 15 years old when I knew nutrition was the thing for me. Growing up in a community where chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes were all around me, I wanted to one day be the expert and the voice in my community to help people prevent or manage those conditions through diet and lifestyle changes. I wanted to inspire people to live a healthier lifestyle and I’m blessed and so grateful that I get to do this now.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I don’t have a favorite. To be honest, I love it all. I love the fact that I get to wear many hats, all doing things I love and am passionate about: providing nutrition counseling to patients; public speaking and media work; and growing a community while building relationships with amazing people.
What food is always on your mind and why?
Avocados! Because is there any other food on this planet that pairs so well with anything and everything?! Yea… exactly. (Well, in my world there isn’t…haha!)
What are three things on your bucket list?
- Skydive
- European tour
- Move to a third world country and do community work
What career would you choose if you had an opportunity to switch jobs for one day?
Definitely a news anchor. When I was younger, I used to mimic TV news anchors and make my family members listen to me…they thought I was pretty crazy.
What’s the best piece of life advice you’ve received?
Commit to God whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Also, don’t wish for it, work for it! BAM.
How do you find balance?
I always take myself out on solo dates, I celebrate myself in so many ways. I don’t take self-care lightly and you shouldn’t either.
If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be – and why?
Fried plantains and bean stew. In Ghana we call it “Red Red” or “KoKo and Beans.” It always hits the spot and never disappoints. Get at me for the recipe, it will change your life!
Name a career accomplishment that you’re most proud of – and why?
Creating a women’s health and wellness network in my home country, Ghana, called “Women’s Nutrition Ghana” and hosting our first event in September 2018. It was something that had been on my heart for some time. I took the leap of faith, made some connections and with the help of some amazing people, we brought it to life. I can’t wait to see the growth and the many lives we will continue to impact through this platform.
