Nutrition Influencer Insights: Q&A with upwaRD Winner Ginger Cochran

The FoodMinds upwaRD program is an industry-leading professional recognition and development program that elevates the voices of emerging nutrition communication leaders. Winners are selected for their expertise in translating evidence-based nutrition recommendations into exciting, engaging, and accessible messages on a variety of different platforms and channels.

What inspired you to specialize in nutrition communications?

I was inspired by the need for qualified professionals who are trained to give accurate, evidence-based nutrition information with no hidden agenda or “strings attached.” There is so much misinformation online, and I saw a growing need for credible voices who can make nutrition feel approachable, realistic, and trustworthy.

What platform or medium do you think is especially powerful for nutrition education in 2026 and why?

Short-form video continues to be incredibly powerful because it allows people to learn quickly in a way that feels relatable and easy to apply to daily life. Social media also gives dietitians the opportunity to meet people where they already are, instead of expecting them to search through complicated medical information. I have my largest audience on Instagram, but I am working on growing my TikTok and YouTube channels.

How do you think nutrition communication will – or should – evolve in the next 5-10 years?

With AI, we have the opportunity to use technology as a tool to become more efficient and reach more people. At the same time, AI can also become dangerous when unqualified individuals use it to spread misinformation. We need more credentialed professionals than ever to step into public-facing roles and help provide accurate, balanced nutrition education people can trust.

Describe the impact that you aim to have on your target audience.

I want people to learn how to love themselves in whatever season of life they are in while making simple, sustainable changes that help them feel better physically and mentally. Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed, not spent constantly comparing yourself to others or chasing perfection.

What does success look like for you as a communicator?

Success means building a large audience rooted in positive, reliable, evidence-based messaging while partnering with brands and organizations that genuinely align with improving people’s health and quality of life.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a nutrition communicator?

One of the biggest challenges is competing with misinformation and sensationalized content online. Evidence-based nutrition is often less “flashy” than quick-fix trends, so part of the challenge is making accurate information engaging while still maintaining integrity.

What are you currently working on that excites you?

I’m currently expanding my work in women’s health, gestational diabetes, fertility, and surrogacy nutrition while continuing to create accessible educational content online. I’m also excited about opportunities involving public speaking, media, and community education.

What’s the food/beverage or nutrition trend that you’re loving right now?

I love the growing focus on fiber from natural food sources and helping people find realistic ways to add more fiber into their daily routines through foods like beans, fruits, vegetables, seeds, and whole grains.

What advice would you give to dietitians who want to build a platform or voice?

Start. Just start. Don’t wait until everything is perfect. Focus on doing one thing at a time, stay consistent, and remember that your voice and perspective matter.

What influences your perspective or creativity?

My everyday life and working with women and moms in so many different situations and seasons of life. Their stories, struggles, resilience, and experiences constantly inspire me and shape how I communicate nutrition.
